MEETINGS 2008
BALTECH meeting of Academic Offices took place in 24-25 November, 2008 in Tallinn The themes of the Meeting were : Promotion, marketing and info-spread. The participants: 1. Jūratė Giedraitienė and Dovilė Ulinskaitė, Vilnius Gediminas technical university 2. Milla Vaisto-Oinonen, Helsinki University of Technology 3. Åsa Bernhardsson, LTH, Lund University 4. Linas Svilainis, Kaunas University of Technology 5. Sigita Klezberga, Riga Technical University 6. Johan Liedström, KTH 7. Anne Urbla, Tallinn University of Technology 8. Kristi Naber, Tallinn University of Technology There was no representative from the Institute of Technology - Linköping University
Most outstanding ideas of each university:
Finland, Helsinki University of Technology • Large-scale competitions for pupils at the age of 7-12. Children are divided into two age groups (7-9 and 10-12). All teams have to consist of 4 kids (whereas at least 2 of them must be girls). Each team gets a package (which are all identical) and a moving toy has to be created of the materials in the package. Regional contests are followed by the big finals at TKK.
Estonia, Tallinn University of Technology • Different competitions (building self-moving robots without motor/electricity; power engineering and physics olympiades supported by Eesti Energia). • Training courses for high-school pupils on technology and science. City-camps for 9th grades.
Latvia, Riga Technical University • Different study fairs where the department of energy organizes tests, experiments, spectacles. • Open-door events for different target groups (separately for different age groups etc).
Lithuania, Kaunas University of Technology and Vilnius Gediminas Technical University • Summer-camps that are oriented on electronics are organized for pupils at the age of 12-14. Contests of building electronical appliances (e.g lamps) are arranged as a part of those camps.
Sweden, Lund University and Royal Institute of Technology • Discovery and research clubs for different age groups. • SI – Supplemental Instruction – a method that’s been carried out to stimulate interest in science and technology among high-school pupils. It also expands cooperation between schools and universities. It’s motivating because kids who at first take part in the lessons can later become SI leaders themselves.
Means of raising interest and spreading information that are used in all universities that participated in the meeting • Visits (both directions: school-children coming to universities and university representatives going to schools) • University websites about admission • Advertisments in newspapers, magazines and internet portals + some universities use also TV commercials; some send their lectors and proffessors to give germane lectures in high-schools etc.
Ideas and future plans generated throughout the meeting • International robotics competition for BALTECH countries (preferably for students as it is easier for them to travel. Under-aged children need their parents along etc) • International (summer)courses for (math) teachers • A web-page of different games about science and technique for children and teenagers
International Relations Office's meeting in 2008 Meeting of International Offices of the BALTECH Consortium took place in Tallinn 22-23 January, 2008. The aim of the meeting was to determine the current state of the participating universities in the international field and to find mutual areas of interest for the cooperation.
The representatives from all participating universities were presented: 1. Natalja Olina, Jolanta Jurevica and Zane Purlaura, Riga Technical University 2. Ingrid Axberg, Linköping University, Institute of Technology 3. Christina Grossmann, Lundi University, Faculty of Engineering 4. Aušra Pelediene, Vilnius Gediminase University of Technology 5. Marianne Persson-Söderlind and Charlotte Elfgren, KTH 6. Minna Söderqvist and Margita Slätis, TKK 7. Neringa Narbutiene, Kaunase University of Technology
The whole staff of the TUT IRO was also represented.
Themes that were discussed: 1. Internationalisation strategy in perspective of 5 years 2. Structure and budget of IRO-s 3. The development platforms of the LLP 4. Practical placements – university-enterprise 5. Participating in international organisations 6. Student recruitment – possible cooperation 7. NORDPLUS – new directions 8. Supporting activities of student organisations
During the active discussions the mutual aims for the future BALTECH cooperation became clear: 1. To use the possibility of BALTECH double-degree programs in the frames of common Master programs to enable foreign students to study at different BALTECH universities during their Master studies. Good argument was the difference between the living standards (e.g. Estonia vs. Sweden). I was proposed to involve also the local students who study at these programs. 2. NORDPLUS – to start mutual project using the experience of Erasmus Mundus project applications 3. To organise seminars in different international themes (for example ’internationalisation at home’) using the different LLP financial possibilities 4. To take part in BALTECH conferences – March 2008 in Riga „Attractiveness of student enrolment“, September 2008 in Helsinki 5. To pay attention to the environmental problems of the Baltic Sea and to use it as a theme in the future cooperation
It was agreed that the next meetings between IRO-s will take place in every 1, 5 year. The meetings will be organised on work-shop bases. During the next meeting the same issues will be discussed to see what has been done in between in cooperation of the universities.
